If you are lucky enough, you may meet dolphins on Paxos while you are out in the sea with your boat! Meeting dolphins while boating is a magical and memorable experience! However, it’s important to approach dolphins respectfully and safely, both for their well-being and for your own. Here’s what to do (and what to avoid) when you encounter dolphins while boating:
1. Stay calm and observe
Reduce Speed: If you’re cruising, slow down or come to a stop. Dolphins are curious creatures and may approach the boat, but sudden movements or fast speeds can be alarming to them.
Be Quiet: Dolphins are highly sensitive to sound, and loud noises can disturb them or make them leave.
Observe from a Distance: Keep a respectful distance from the dolphins and do not attempt to approach or chase them.
2. Avoid Direct Interaction
Don’t try to touch them: Never attempt to touch or swim with wild dolphins. While dolphins may seem friendly, they are wild animals, and attempting to touch them can stress them out or disrupt their natural behavior.

Take Photos: Use a zoom lens so you don’t have to get too close. Avoid using flash, as it can startle the dolphins and other wildlife.
Watch for Behavior: Dolphins are highly social creatures and often display playful behavior. You may see them jumping, leaping, or even riding the bow wave of the boat.
6. Respect their space
Do Not Block Their Path: If you’re drifting or anchored, be sure to give the dolphins space to swim freely. Don’t position your boat in a way that would block their path or trap them.
Observe and Leave: If the dolphins seem to lose interest or swim away, respect their decision and let them go. Don’t follow them or try to bring them back to your boat.
